Either today or tomorrow is my mother's birthday. I'm pretty sure it's tomorrow, but I have trouble because I remember it's the second to last day of February -- but is that with or without a leap year? Ma, if today is your birthday, I officially suck. Again. For another year. And I'm calling you tonight so I can split the difference no matter which day it really is. But -- I love you so much. Please do not be disappointed if I've failed you again.
It drives Beloved nuts, too. He was born in 1973, and on August 24. I was born in 1974. So then I sit there and think, well, GOD, was he born in '73 or '74? Is the four supposed to be on the day or the year? GOD I DON'T KNOW. And my sister. In high school, I had a boyfriend who was born on May 18. Her birthday is May 21. I juxtaposed the two birthdays for years, even after my boyfriend and I were history. Now I am seriously sweating because it's like staring at the word "stop" for too long -- WHICH IS RIGHT? I DON'T REMEMBER!
My friends are pretty understanding. For years, Nicole would call us all on her birthday and say, "IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!" and then we could respond, "OH, YES! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" and nobody would be mad because dude, she never forgot her birthday. It was uncanny.
I've disappointed my family for years. I'm going to disappoint my daughter, I'm sure, as she was born on 04/06/04. Do the fours go by each other or on the ends? Sure, now it's easy, but WHAT ABOUT WHEN SHE'S 24?
