Because I Love Her: 34 Women Writers Reflect on the Mother-Daughter Bond

As you know, I'm a fan of anthologies, and the writers editor Andrea N. Richesin has snagged, including Karen Joy Fowler, Joyce Maynard, Jacquelyn Mitchard and Susan Wiggs, enticed me to request Because I Love Her for review.

Some thought-provoking excerpts:

• "Here's what just hit me:  How you really can't have everything. You have to give up the old to get the new. You can't be the child and the mom at the same time." -- Katherine Center
• "In fact, I don't think it's my job to save them {daughters} from heartbreak. I just want them to be able to recognize it for what it is and have enough self-respect to not stick around for more." -- Quinn Dalton
• "This is one of the best things a child does:  reminds the grown-up to believe in magic." -- Susan Wiggs

I think there could've been fewer essays -- that's my only complaint about the book. Thirty-four got to be a lot, even though all are strong writers. I enjoyed the book in the bathtub, mostly, and the essays were the perfect length for a good soak. They were thought-provoking and covered a variety of subjects, which makes this collection strong for the mother of a girl or girls. Like me.
